Are Black Girls Really Rocking?
Limited Capacity full

When discussing academic and behavioral disparities, the national conversation is often focused on improving conditions for African-American boys. Black girls, who grow up in the same neighborhoods and experience some of the same traumas, are often left out of the conversation. As educators, how do we effectively support our girls while challenging them to be the black girl that rocks? In this session we will discuss the intersectionality of race & gender in education & how we can challenge practices that have historically minimize the growth & development of our black girls.

Backwards Planning for Success - Project Management for Scholars
Limited Capacity full

While we all love a good project, planning for and monitoring scholar progress and success on a major project can sometimes be daunting. Project-based learning provides the opportunity for teachers to step back and let scholars run with their own ideas and creativity. It also presents the ideal circumstances to build executive functioning and self-regulation skills in our scholars. During this session, teachers will backwards plan a unit-based project in order to determine steps and skills for scholar success as well as planning for active project management and skill building during the project's progress. This session is for middle and high school teachers at all levels of project-planning stages.

Putting the Story in History: Strategies for Engagement and Discussion
Limited Capacity seats available

Faulker famously wrote "the past isn't dead. It's not even past." In many of our classrooms, history instruction stays in 2000 BCE. In this session, we will look at how to structure to articulate a purpose to students besides just learning the past - and to learn techniques that will promote student inquiry and discussing about values within a history classroom.

A R.O.S.E. From Concrete: Countering the Narrative of Criminalized Girls of Color Through Enrichment
Limited Capacity full

#BlackLivesMatter. #MeToo. #SayHerName. #BlackGirlMagic. What do all these Movements have in common? They were started by women focused on the enrichment and empowerment of females, particularly those of color. Teachers interested in transforming the lives of the young ladies in their schools should attend this session. This session is an in-depth case study about the criminalization of minority girls and the preventative measures taken at one DP school to address and combat the staggering statistics our girls face. R.O.S.E. (Respectful Outstanding Sisters of Excellence) is an after-school program at DP Bronx Prep that has successfully begun to address these concerns.Teachers will leave this session more aware of the challenges our young ladies face and equipped with proven, data driven techniques they can use when creating enrichment programs for girls on their campuses.

Escape My Classroom
Limited Capacity full

The clock is ticking, time is running out, and you haven’t gotten to the exit ticket yet. Your scholars are trying to escape the room and you kind of want to too.

Why not play into it? Break the monotony of your lessons and create an escape the room review session. Scholars work together and demonstrate mastery of the content by unlocking puzzles and solving mysteries. This activity promotes critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration.

In this session, you'll have a mini experience of an academic escape the room challenge. Then we will provide you with the structure and tools to plan your own.

Can your scholars make it in 50 minutes? The clock is ticking, and Trimester 1 exams are coming.

Case Studies to Increase Rigor
Limited Capacity seats available

We all want our scholars to fully internalize our content and be able to apply it to a variety of contexts. But how do we do that? In this session, we’ll explore an actual project in which scholars assume the role of constitutional lawyers in an imagined Supreme Court case. Participants will get to analyze the lead up, actual work, and summative activity from the perspective of both scholar and observer. After, we’ll have space to analyze the activity and discuss how to apply this type of activity to their own class.

...But, Aren't They in High School Now?": High Expectations for High School Scholars
Limited Capacity seats available

Some of our best practices for creating strong school-wide and classroom culture are rooted in our middle school origin stories. When scholars enter high school, especially in the 11th and 12th grade, some of these strategies must evolve with the socio-emotional needs of young adults. "Sitting in STAR" and "pencils down" just aren't going to work. However, the pendulum can swing too far the other way, and we miss an opportunity to hold our oldest learners to the high expectations they deserve. In this session, we are going to explore what "warm strict to grow" means for high school scholars through role playing best practices and some reflective soul-searching.

Close Reading a "Close Reading
Limited Capacity seats available

Close Reading is a strategy that takes an “inch-wide, mile-deep” approach to dissecting complex texts. In this session, you’ll learn why close reading is such a valuable skill for our scholars to practice and learn. Then you’ll learn and practice two types of Close Reading. Close Reading “bursts” allow scholars to take a deeper dive into a shorter amount of text. Longer close readings will promote reading stamina in your classroom. Using a bank of texts relevant to an upcoming Reading or Writing unit, you’ll take ownership of close reading in your classroom by creating and practicing your own close reads for an upcoming lesson!

Teaching Korean to Non-Heritage Learners: Biggest Challenges and Best Strategies
Limited Capacity seats available

Korean teachers in Democracy Prep are in a unique situation where students in our classrooms are 100% "non-heritage" learners. Since curricula and teaching methods used by Korean teachers in the United States have traditionally targeted teaching students of Korean American heritage, we need to develop curriculum that meet the needs of our unique student body. My goal for this session is to provide Korean teachers useful insights on how to effectively respond to a few issues that non-heritage learners struggle understanding: verb/adjectives conjugation, use of particles and S-O-V sentence structure. Some frequent mistakes our students make will be presented and teachers will discuss ways to teach the needed skills to prevent them. I would also like to share with the team how I have dealt with those topics and ask teachers to share their own experiences.

Everybody Reads!
Limited Capacity filling up

The goal of this session is to share and practice strategies to create a joyous culture of reading in your classroom. In order for our scholars to master the aims in our lessons, they must truly grapple with the texts we put in front of them. But how do we prevent scholars from checking out during independent or whole group reading? I will share strategies that have worked for me in my class of struggling readers to establish a strong culture of reading. Session participants will participate in a classroom simulation, debrief the use of strategies, and practice engaging all scholars during control the game. This session is recommended to teachers who have had an introduction to control the game and is open to all content teachers although the strategies may be more helpful for humanities teachers.

One of the best parts about using Desmos activities is the live data collection feature. When you implement the lesson, you can see individual student responses for each question/task and then decide to provide individual, small group, or whole class feedback. This session is for teachers who do not know how to create a custom activity using Desmos. Please come with an AIM that requires student to do mathematics in multiple representations, one being the coordinate plane.
