Are Black Girls Really Rocking?
Limited Capacity full

When discussing academic and behavioral disparities, the national conversation is often focused on improving conditions for African-American boys. Black girls, who grow up in the same neighborhoods and experience some of the same traumas, are often left out of the conversation. As educators, how do we effectively support our girls while challenging them to be the black girl that rocks? In this session we will discuss the intersectionality of race & gender in education & how we can challenge practices that have historically minimize the growth & development of our black girls.

Make Me: Engaging Student Resistance at School!
Limited Capacity filling up

Have you ever wondered what makes some students rebel and push back on rules at school? Do you wish there were ways you could engage that resistance in order to make the scholars more successful at school and make Democracy Prep a better place for having listened to and responded to the valid pushes articulated by its students? Do you wish there were ways we could reduce our suspension numbers while not sacrificing a safe and joyous culture on our
campuses? Please join us to discuss a groundbreaking book by Eric Toshalis entitled "Make Me: Engaging and Understanding Student Resistance." We will explore ways to engage student resistance in order to ensure high academic achievement for all of our scholars and to ensure that Democracy Prep continues to evolve, in terms of its discipline policies network-wide. We
will also engage in some strategic action planning for your school context for the 18-19 school year.

Problem of Practice: A Collaborative Problem Solving Process
Limited Capacity seats available

It can be difficult at times to find the right solution to problems we are confronted with because of our inability to step back, be completely objective, and ask the right questions when we are in the thick of it. Sometimes it takes an objective voice to help us unpack the problem in order to identify the root cause and thus the appropriate solution. During this session, teacher-leaders from across all regions will have the opportunity to work through the Problem of Practice Consultancy Protocol using peer selected problems that individuals are currently grappling with in their teacher-leader role. This session is an opportunity to tap the expertise of a group of peers around a particular dilemma and get respectful, thoughtful responses to solve the problem. DP YOU provides a unique space to leverage the ideas and feedback from all teacher-leaders in order to discover solutions to problems that may not have not been thought of before.

Educating for Global Competence

What do we mean when we say “global competence?” Why is it important for our scholars, both now and as they prepare for college and careers? In an increasingly interconnected world, being globally competent is no longer a luxury but a necessity. This session will explore the value of global education for all scholars, both in service of educational equity and in preparing scholars for a life of active citizenship. We’ll explore resources that DREAM team members can utilize on their campuses and in their classrooms to advance global citizenship across all grade levels. Attendees will leave with concrete ideas and proposals that can be shared with leaders and colleagues to implement with ease back on campus.

Format Matters!
Limited Capacity full

Our students are inundated daily with information: powerpoints, grades, handouts, flyers, and so much more. While this information is important, your message will be lost if not delivered in an aesthetically pleasing, succinct, and sticky way that best allows students to internalize and retain the information provided. In this session, you will learn how to make your materials POP, download fonts, add pizzazz to powerpoints (especially lecture heavy classes, town halls, etc.), and jazz up handouts.
