Are Black Girls Really Rocking?
Limited Capacity full

When discussing academic and behavioral disparities, the national conversation is often focused on improving conditions for African-American boys. Black girls, who grow up in the same neighborhoods and experience some of the same traumas, are often left out of the conversation. As educators, how do we effectively support our girls while challenging them to be the black girl that rocks? In this session we will discuss the intersectionality of race & gender in education & how we can challenge practices that have historically minimize the growth & development of our black girls.

Best Practices | ACTion steps for the DP Co-planner!
Limited Capacity filling up

Genuine and effective co-teaching involves three key cycles: co-planning, co-instructing, and co-assessing. One of highest leverage actions in the co-teaching partnership is learning how to more efficiently intellectually prep and co-plan. Come check out this DP-YOU sesh that'll take you through the first step of the co-teaching cycle, and see how effective co-planning will not only improve your instruction, but grow your co-teacher partnership! This session will help you workshop the skills you need to collaboratively prepare for upcoming lessons, better diversify your content delivery, and ultimately ensure that scholars with IEPs are receiving greater access to federally mandated SDI (Specially Designed Instruction). Increase the effectiveness of your co-taught classroom and drive your practice from good to great! It is strongly recommended that co-teachers attend this session together.

Building Academic Ownership and Eliminating the Element of Surprise
Limited Capacity seats available

In this session we will discuss how to get rid of the element of surprise when scholars find out they are failing. We will identify how to effectively communicate: 1) What a grade is. We will define the word "grade" in the context of Democracy Prep. 2) What the grade means. We will figure out a way to explain what the number value of each grade means within Democracy Prep and the greater academic world. 3) How the value of the grade gets distributed at the trimester and annual level. We will figure out how to explain the meaning behind each trimester grade and how that factors into their overall yearly grade for every class. This is the time in which we will mathematically break-down each trimester clearly so that the weight of each trimester can be understood by scholars. Furthermore, this will be a time in which you will brainstorm with like-minded individuals to come up with a way to build this type of conversation and ways to measure scholar progress into the daily culture at Democracy Prep.

DP serves all scholars, including those experiencing homelessness, even when there are logistical challenges to their attendance and participation in school. McKinney-Vento regulations provide an extra layer of mandates that hold schools accountable for serving these scholars. You will leave the session with resources for your ongoing education and for support with your school’s compliance with McKinney-Vento law.

Have you ever wondered what makes some students rebel and push back on rules at school? Do you wish there were ways you could engage that resistance in order to make the scholars more successful at school and make Democracy Prep a better place for having listened to and responded to the valid pushes articulated by its students? Do you wish there were ways we could reduce our suspension numbers while not sacrificing a safe and joyous culture on our
campuses? Please join us to discuss a groundbreaking book by Eric Toshalis entitled "Make Me: Engaging and Understanding Student Resistance." We will explore ways to engage student resistance in order to ensure high academic achievement for all of our scholars and to ensure that Democracy Prep continues to evolve, in terms of its discipline policies network-wide. Backwards Planning for Success - Project Management for Scholars
Limited Capacity full

While we all love a good project, planning for and monitoring scholar progress and success on a major project can sometimes be daunting. Project-based learning provides the opportunity for teachers to step back and let scholars run with their own ideas and creativity. It also presents the ideal circumstances to build executive functioning and self-regulation skills in our scholars. During this session, teachers will backwards plan a unit-based project in order to determine steps and skills for scholar success as well as planning for active project management and skill building during the project's progress. Want to maximize time for direct instruction? Looking to level-up your guided practice game? It's time to work on building effective guide practice into your direct instruction. When teachers don't execute this effectively, the rigor of instruction drops dramatically. Learn the criteria for successfully planning and
executing guided practice. Get some practice in drafting guided practice and leave with some clear feedback.

Talk Data to Me: Long Term Data Trackers to Maximize Scholar Success
Limited Capacity filling up

Educators at high performing charter schools are awash with data. We are consistently trying to respond to this data, but how do we manage such large amounts of data when we have so many other things to juggle? In this session, teachers will be introduced to a long term data tracking tool that allows them to track scholars by question type, standard, and skill. Additionally, this tool will allow teachers to track students by academic services, unit performance, and other demographic factors. Come learn how to be a whiz with data!

Build that Ratio: Six Kagan Cooperative Learning Strategies to Use on Monday

In this session, we will practice six engaging and fun structures you can use on Monday: Timed Round Robin, All Write Round Robin, Fan N' Pick, Numbered Heads Together, Gallery Walk for mini-presentations, and Sage-and-Scribe.

Kagan Cooperative Learning pedagogy builds ratio so effectively because it relies upon four principles: Positive Interdependence, Individual Accountability, Equal Participation, and Simultaneous Interaction. When these principles are followed, students are most able to take intellectual risks, solve problems creatively, collaborate rather than compete, and engage in rigorous critical thought.

These approaches not only significantly boost both participation and think ratio, they instill values of tolerance, empathy, community, and humor.

The English language is complex and challenging, but teaching it shouldn't be. Let's put the '/f/un' back into phonics! • Who has power and where does said power come from?

Affirmations to Shape the Counternarrative
Limited Capacity seats available

Prior to the 1960s the African American school was one of the greatest influencers of hope and identity amid countless obstacles. Here they developed their own mantras for success and community building. The dismantling of these institutions has made African American students more vulnerable to negative messages. In an era where scholars are bombarded by stale ideas about success and media it is important to create stronger story of their purpose-- the counter-narrative. Scholars can start by making affirmations for themselves! We will discuss factors that have lead to poor messaging of expectations to Black youth, and identify the areas in Democracy Prep where developing a strong counter-narrative is happening everyday (and areas where we may need to improve!). Several resources currently exists that support building a greater consciousness for our scholars, so let's explore together! We will practice the practice of affirmations to unpack how to deliver this lesson with scholars. Finally, we will create personalized commitment statements to make this an intentional part of planning at our campuses.

...But, Aren't They in High School Now?": High Expectations for High School Scholars
Limited Capacity seats available

Some of our best practices for creating strong school-wide and classroom culture are rooted in our middle school origin stories. When scholars enter high school, especially in the 11th and 12th grade, some of these strategies must evolve with the socio-emotional needs of young adults. "Sitting in STAR" and "pencils down" just aren't going to work. However, the pendulum can swing too far the other way, and we miss an opportunity to hold our oldest learners to the high expectations they deserve. In this session, we are going to explore what "warm strict to grow" means for high school scholars through role playing best practices and some reflective soul-searching.

Close Reading “bursts” allow scholars to take a deeper dive into a shorter amount of text. Longer close readings will promote reading stamina in your classroom. Using a bank of texts relevant to an upcoming Reading or Writing unit, you’ll take ownership of close reading in your classroom by creating and practicing your own close reads for an upcoming lesson!

Rigorous Rubrics; a low-lift way to ensure strong scholar work, horizontal alignment, vertical alignment and scholar revisions.
Limited Capacity seats available

Have you ever sat down to grade your papers or exams, and realized that your scholars think that a two-word answer is sufficient for an open response? We have all felt the gap between explaining what high quality work looks like and actually equipping scholars to do high quality work. Come and learn how shared rubrics can help push scholars to write to their full potential in your classroom, and how you can leverage these rubrics to ensure horizontal alignment in your grade level or vertical alignment within your department.

Statistics for "Normal" People
Limited Capacity seats available

Ok, so that was a bad pun about "normal"...even if it didn't register as such, this session could be for you! Statistics often get a bad rap as an unapproachable and indecipherable subject, but there are some fundamental ideas that can be useful for all adults when they are put into plain English. Understanding how numbers are used and abused is a type of power that we want our scholars to master, but one we also need to master for ourselves. Join us to learn some Statistical concepts that you can apply to your life regardless of background or current occupation.

Note: Participants should bring their DP computer to this session.

Teaching Korean to Non-Heritage Learners: Biggest Challenges and Best Strategies
Limited Capacity seats available

Korean teachers in Democracy Prep are in a unique situation where students in our classrooms are 100% "non-heritage" learners. Since curricula and teaching methods used by Korean teachers in the United States have traditionally targeted teaching students of Korean American heritage, we need to develop curriculum that meet the needs of our unique student body. My goal for this session is to provide Korean teachers useful insights on how to effectively respond to a few issues that non-heritage learners struggle understanding: verb/adjectives conjugation, use of particles and S-O-V sentence structure. Some frequent mistakes our students make will be presented and teachers will discuss ways to teach the needed skills to prevent them. I would also like to share with the team how I have dealt with those topics and ask teachers to share their own experiences.

Making Meaning of MAP for Scholars
Limited Capacity filling up

We take MAP testing two to three times a year. This is the equivalent of spending three full school days on MAP testing. If we commit this much time to it, we need to make it meaningful for our scholars. During our session you will learn key entry points to understanding MAP data. You will leave with the MAP reflection tools and templates necessary to transfer ownership of data to scholars. This leads to all teachers ultamate goal of our scholars being invested in their own learning and growth.

Here are two main reasons why you should LOVE MAP testing:
1. Being able to track scholar data over multiple years embodies what it means to be a "Growth Matters Most" network
2. The data is available instantly. Mean you can create purposeful groupings, targeted inventions, and personalized goals for scholars right away.
